One surf session, one useful goal

A clear objective helps you notice progress that a highlight clip might miss.

Choose something you can observe

Work with a coach to define one behaviour for the session. It might concern positioning, preparation or a movement you have already been taught. Avoid a vague aim such as get better at everything; it makes feedback difficult to use.

Keep the environment appropriate

Choose a session and conditions that let you work on the goal. If most of your attention is spent coping with the setting, simplify the task with an instructor. A demanding environment is not a shortcut to purposeful practice.

Record a few clear observations

After the session, note what you attempted, what changed and what feedback you received. Keep the language specific: where you looked, when you moved or what the coach asked you to notice. Do not turn one successful attempt into a conclusion that the skill is finished.

Decide the next small step

Ask whether to repeat the task, adjust the cue or return to a simpler version. Keep the next goal connected to what you observed. Progress can mean making a decision more consistently, not just trying a harder manoeuvre.
